Kumu Lawrence has a wealth of knowledge of Hawaiian Traditions. His style of teaching is “no fluff”, he will give it to you straight and always with a lot of aloha.

Kumu Paʻa Kawika Foster and apprentices Kathryn Roberts and Kyrian van Vliet assist Kumu Lawrence on the Molokai Hula Bliss & Huakaʻi.

Kumu Pa’a Lawrence’s teachings are very inspiring on many levels. The way he teaches is so deep and intensive, unique to anything or anyone I know off.

Program

Ceremonies: protocols and process

The Molokai Hula Bliss & Huakaʻi 2020 starts with the Opening Ceremony including Hoʻike (hula performance) and paʻina (food). The next day you participate in ceremonies to prepare you for the journeys, the Huakaʻi, on a physical, mental and spiritual level by doing hula, oli (Hawaiian Chants) and making leis for protection.

For you to get ready, individually and as a group, on a mental and spiritual level we do:

  • group hoʻoponopono: A process of healing relationships so as to clearing the gateway connecting us to the Higher Being

  • kapu kai: Ceremonial sea bath for cleansing

  • ʻawa ceremony: sacred bonding ritual between the gods and we can honor the gods, give gratitude and ask for blessings and guidance from the gods for our upcoming journeys

Classes & Presentations

You will learn a lot about Molokai and its Hawaiian Traditions. A couple of workshops you will do in the retreat:

  • Introduction "Molokai Nui A Hina, Molokai Island Child of the great Mother, Protector and Goddess Hina"

  • Protocol Chants and Songs. Be prepared to invest time before the retreat to learn chants. Upon registration, you will receive a free study package containing video classes and class materials.

  • Hula ʻAuana (modern style hula) and Hula Kahiko (Traditional Style Hula)

  • Laʻau Lapaʻau (Hawaiian Herbal Medicine). You will get to know indigenous and endemic plants and their uses in medicine.

  • Leimaking both La’i (ti-leaf) and yarn

Excursions and moʻolelo (stories)

With learning the hula and the chants comes the kuleana (responsibility) to connect with the place you are dancing or chanting about. So we go holoholo to:

  • Places of Wahi Pana (legendary places) and significant archeological sites on Molokai

  • Kalaupapa Lookout & Phallic Rocks

  • Visit the mountain area (only reachable with 4WD!)

Is the retreat for people like me?

Maybe you identify yourself as a Lomilomi practitioner (or massage therapist), a (hula) dancer, a healer, or someone seeking healing or a life change? Do you just love Hawaiʻi and wanting to learn more about the Hawaiian traditions? Or are you a nature person, and want to see, feel and hear the beauty of Molokai and see a night sky where you actually see stars?!

If you answer yes to any of the descriptions, this may be the retreat you are looking for!

“Nānā I Ke Kumu” - Look to the Source

The retreat is for those of you who want to know more about Hawaiian traditions shared by a native Hawaiian elder and respected teacher, Kumu Paʻa Lawrence Aki, on one of the most Hawaiian islands, Molokai.

You will experience the real deal with Kumu Lawrence. Learning from the source instead from so-called Hawaiian teachings by books, YouTube, foreign teachers, or other new-age self-help courses.

Your Purpose and Reason

Everyone comes at the retreat for a different reason and purpose. You will receive an experience unique to you. We canʻt promise you what you will get out of it, we can only show you our program. Your intentions and actions will creates shape what you will take home with you.

[Molokai Hula Bliss & Huakaʻi] is a journey into your own na’au. Everybody will experience it in his or her own way, but they have to be open to it and realize that Molokai is Hawaiʻi in its purest. Living partly off the grid will make you contemplate and enjoy the use of the senses you forgot to use. This is not Waikīkī, if you want Waikīkī, you have no business coming to the Molokai Hula Bliss & Huakaʻi..

“A very deep experience of ceremonies, story telling, visiting sacred sites, hula, chanting, feeling the interconnectedness with the people, the environment and the ancestors, shared cooking and meals, learning how to function and move as a group, developing rich friendships.”
— Jen B. from Perth, West-Australia, Participant of Molokai Hula Bliss & Huakaʻi 2018.
